Shoulder Pain and Desk Jobs: Ergonomic Tips for a Healthier Workstation

    HenryBy HenryApril 17, 2023No Comments3 Mins Read

In today’s world, desk jobs are becoming increasingly popular as technology advances. However, spending long hours sitting in front of a computer will lead to various health problems, including shoulder pain. Shoulder pain is a common complaint among office workers and is caused by many factors, including poor posture and inadequate workspace setup. Fortunately, ergonomic tips can help alleviate Cumming shoulder pain and make your workstation healthier.

    Tips for a healthier workstation

    1.     Maintain Proper Posture

Poor posture can cause tension and strain in the muscles and ligaments surrounding the shoulder joint. To avoid this, keep your shoulders relaxed, and avoid hunching forward or slouching. Keep your feet flat on the ground and your back straight. You may also want to invest in an ergonomic chair that supports your back.

    2.     Adjust Your Chair and Desk Height

The height of your chair and desk plays a significant role in shoulder pain. Your elbows should be at a 90-degree angle when your hands are resting on your keyboard. If your desk is too high, you may need to adjust the height of your chair or use a footrest to keep your feet flat on the ground.

      3.    Use a Headset or Speakerphone

If your job involves making frequent phone calls, holding the phone between your ear and shoulder can contribute to shoulder pain. To avoid this, consider using a headset or speakerphone. This will allow you to relax your shoulders while talking on the phone, reducing tension in the muscles and ligaments surrounding the shoulder joint. Adjust the headset or speakerphone to the correct height for your body to avoid straining your shoulders.

    4.     Take Frequent Breaks

Sitting for long periods without moving will lead to stiffness and tension in your muscles. Take a break every hour or so and stretch your arms and shoulders. You can also get up and walk around to give your body a break from sitting.

    5.     Use a Standing Desk

Recently, standing desks have become increasingly popular for a good reason. They can help improve posture and reduce the risk of shoulder pain. Standing desks can also help reduce the risk of other health problems associated with sitting for long periods, such as obesity and heart disease. If you are considering a standing desk, adjust it to the correct height for your body.

       6.   Stretch and Exercise Regularly

Incorporating simple shoulder stretches and exercises into your daily routine can help keep your shoulder muscles strong and flexible. Some easy shoulder exercises include shoulder shrugs, circles, and wall angels. You can also consider doing yoga or Pilates, which can help improve overall posture and reduce shoulder tension. Remember to stretch and exercise slowly and gently to avoid injury.

Small changes will make a big difference in your health, take the time to evaluate your workstation and make the necessary adjustments to ensure a comfortable work environment. If you have any concerns about shoulder pains, contact Stephen Fisher, M.D. for more information.
