“Falsely presenting oneself as someone else” is what phishing entails.

Phishing attacks are easy for thieves to carry out, and victims may be taken advantage of just as easily. Additionally, it has the capability of granting hackers access to both personal and professional accounts on the systems of those it targets. Scammers use basic phishing attacks to trick their victims into doing what they want them to, generally through email, but the scam has now expanded beyond suspicious emails to phone calls, social media, messaging platforms, and apps (known as “smishing”). Hackers may be provided with passwords to facilitate the hacking of a business easier. Fraudsters may alter bank information to make payments go to their own accounts instead of the correct ones. A frequent tactic used by cyber thieves is phishing, which tries to deceive victims into clicking on or downloading malicious links or documents, which then surreptitiously install malware like trojans or ransomware.

When victims are tricked into clicking on a link that leads to an impostor website, their personal information is collected. Each month, around 1.4 million of these sites are created.

For advanced phishing techniques, hackers may utilise fake social media accounts, emails, and other ways to build a relationship with the victim over months or even years, particularly if the victim wants to give over private or personally identifiable information. In addition to an individual’s or company’s email address and password, this data may also contain credit card numbers, online banking credentials, and personal information like a person’s date of birth, address and SSN. All of this information may be used by fraudsters to perform crimes like identity theft or to make purchases using stolen credit card information on the black market. It’s possible it’ll be sold for profit on the dark web. Retribution or shame for the victim are two common motives. When spies or state-sponsored hacking groups use phishing to obtain information about their targets and rivals, they are using a practise called spear phishing. An email phishing attack is very rare, since attackers often use other methods to get sensitive information from their victims.
