    Exhale one last breath

Former Indian Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi has died. He breathed his last at Guwahati Medical College Hospital on Monday afternoon. He was 65 years old.

    The cause of death

Gogoi was admitted to the hospital on November 2 with shortness of breath. He was kept on ventilation as his physical condition deteriorated. On Sunday night, the physical condition deteriorated terribly.

He recovered after being infected with the coronavirus. However, doctors said that he died due to post-virus symptoms.

On August 25, Gogoi was diagnosed with corona. After being hospitalized for about two months, he was released on October 25.

    Political life

Assam Assembly elections are scheduled to be held in April-May along with West Bengal. Political analysts believe that the death of Gogoi, the top leader of the provincial Congress, has weakened the Congress in the largest state in north-east India.

Gogoi, a four-time MLA, was the Chief Minister of Assam for three consecutive terms from 2001 to 2016. Gogoi holds the record for the longest tenure as Chief Minister in the history of Assam. Although the Congress was ousted from power in Assam in the 2016 assembly elections, he won his seat by a huge margin. He has also been a Lok Sabha MP four times from Jorhat and twice from Kaliabar Center.

    Birth and political beginnings

Tarun Gogoi, a native of Assam and a representative of the Tai-Ahom community, was born in 1936 in Jorhat district of Assam. Her father was a local tea garden doctor. Gogoi has been a ‘handcuff’ in Congress politics since his student days. After graduating in law from Guwahati University, he contested the first Jorhat municipal election in 1986. That first election victory. In the 1981 Lok Sabha elections, Indira Gandhi chose Gogoi as her candidate for the Jorhat Center. Gogoi was the MP of that centre till 1985. Gogoi became a minister in the Narsingh Rao government after winning the Kaliabar Lok Sabha seat in 1991.
