Birth and political beginnings
Tarun Gogoi, a native of Assam and a representative of the Tai-Ahom community, was born in 1936 in Jorhat district of Assam. Her father was a local tea garden doctor. Gogoi has been a ‘handcuff’ in Congress politics since his student days. After graduating in law from Guwahati University, he contested the first Jorhat municipal election in 1986.
