4 Key Factors to Consider When Choosing a Dog Breed

    HenryBy HenryAugust 31, 2022No Comments3 Mins Read

Welcoming a puppy to your family needs more planning than you thought. Whether you see puppies as pets or want a dog’s help with a specialized task, choosing a good dog breeder, like Perfect Pooches, is important. Perfect Pooches are popular in Sussex as they breed cavapoo dogs too.

Of course, when choosing a dog breed, you will have to properly evaluate your home before you bring the canine friend to your home. But there are factors you will need to consider before you take care of that. These factors include:

    1. Size

The dog’s size matters. Your new dog must be a perfect fit for the entire family. If you are looking to get a large dog, it is important to determine if the pet will have enough space to roam around and bed down at night. But if the square footage is an issue, perhaps a medium or small-sized pet will do.

Some breeds are also active. So a big yard will be an advantage. But others are satisfied with the occasional visit outdoors. Regardless, every dog must relieve itself, making it necessary that you get a green space for exercise and walking.

    2. Temperament

Some breeds are regarded as more friendly and outgoing, whereas others are prone to showing aggression. The kind of dog breed you choose depends on your family’s needs.

More aggressive breeds will be a good option if your family wants a protective animal or guard dog. But if they just want a family pet, easygoing dog breeds will be a suitable option. Other temperament features to look at are:

    • Compatibility
    • Sensitivity
    • Loyalty
    • Intelligence
    • Activity level, playfulness, and energy

    3. Age

First-time puppy owners feel overwhelmed when choosing between an older dog and a puppy. While there is no perfect age to adopt a puppy or dog, your lifestyle will help to decide.

If you consider choosing a pup, get prepared to invest more time in offering them training. And if you have a busy lifestyle, a puppy will not be a perfect option for you.

In contrast, older dogs won’t require a lot of training. Most of them have been trained already and might even have obedience training, all thanks to their previous owners.

    4. Experience

As a dog/puppy owner, your experience is an important factor to look at when choosing a breed to go for. Some puppies are naturally simple to train, while others will require a lot of patience and effort. Going for a dog breed, which doesn’t suit your entire experience, is likely to lead to stress and being an untrained pet.

In case this is your first time to adopt a dog, be sure to look at options like Greyhounds, Golden Retrievers, and Havanese. They normally have very gentle temperaments. Plus, they are trainable and friendly. But if you have prior experience, a Tamaskan, Fox Terrier, or Dalmatian will be a perfect option.

    Final Thoughts!

Choosing a good dog breed is more than just checking its cuteness. You might think that you’re buying a specific breed for your needs. But the truth is that it is important to prioritize the dog’s needs, size, age, and temperament.
